While Beasts in Velvet works well as a stand-alone story, I imagine it works better when read as part of the overall series.

Veteran watchman "Filthy" Harald Kleindeinst, armed with his polished steel Magnin throwing knife, teams up with scryer Rosanna Ophuls, nobleman Baron Johann von Mecklenberg, and honest but rookie watchman Helmut Elsaesser, in order to hunt a serial killer murdering prostitutes on the foggy streets of Altdorf, capital of a fantasy version of the mediaeval Holy Roman Empire. Suspicions are spread around a number of side characters, keeping the reader guessing as to who may be the real killer.A low fantasy murder mystery disguised as a Warhammer book, this is my all time favorite among Warhammer literature - and it's ranking high among my favorite literature altogether. Interesting characters, well written, wonderful worldbuilding... And a twist I honestly didn't see coming until JUST before it was revealed (the best moment really, as you can be proud of seeing it before the reveal but don't feel it was obvious. This one's pretty much a variation of a Jack the Ripper story set in the Warhammer fantasy universe, though I got a kick out of the Dirty Harry references as well. It is essentially a tale of Jack the Ripper set in Altdorf and Newman plays with literature a bit, as he does in Anno Dracula, and has Dirty Harry (of Clint Eastwood fame) appear in the novel.
