Life in the solar system

It is by far the most important source of energy for life on Earth. To me, everything we have found with Cassini really makes the case to go to Enceladus first, above any other place in the solar system, if you're in a hurry to investigate a habitable zone. The proposals are for missions to improve our understanding of the Sun and the space environment with which it interacts around Earth. But then you'd have to dig under the icecaps to get to them.

Now, we suspect, as I've already said, that the liquid water probably persists there indefinitely. You would expect fewer particles, fewer solids if it were coming from sublimating ice. This giant spherical shell surrounds our solar system.

That's the upper limit. This site is maintained by the Planetary Science Communications team at So it's becoming harder and harder to escape the conclusion that there's a body of liquid water within Enceladus. Some of them grew big enough for their gravity to shape them into spheres, becoming planets, dwarf planets and large moons. Titan surface life, as I've said, is just pure speculation.

Of course, if we ever discover that genesis has occurred independently twice in our solar system, no matter where we find it, then that means that the spell has been broken, the existence theorem has been proven, and we could infer from that that life is not a bug but a feature of the universe in which we live, and has occurred a staggering number of times throughout the 13.7 billion-year history of the universe. Of the eight planets, Mercury and Venus are the only ones with no moons. You can't do it with radioactivity alone.

But this brings up the issue, how long does it take for life to develop? You can also measure what's called chirality.

Our solar system is the only place we know of that harbors life, but the farther we explore the more we find potential for life in other places. In the winter of 2005, icy plumes were seen geysering from the surface of Enceladus, one of Saturn's moons. It just means that it is right now the go-to place in our solar system for examining a habitable zone. And, in fact, some of the very, very early observations in which the geysers—or the jets, as I call them—were first seen had been given a title with the word Articles from Britannica Encyclopedias for elementary and high school students. The question is, has the liquid persisted long enough for life to even get started? Venus is 7,521 miles wide (12,104 km). So far, we have discovered thousands of planetary systems orbiting other stars in the Milky Way, with more planets being found all the time.

The Oort Cloud is the boundary of the Sun's gravitational influence, where orbiting objects can turn around and return closer to our Sun.The Sun's heliosphere doesn't extend quite as far. Chirality is a fancy word for handedness. There's so much salt there that it could only be that the solids were previously droplets of salty water and then got frozen. The spacecraft is on track to touch asteroid Bennu's surface during its first sample collection attempt on Oct. 20. We now strongly suspect that the jets are coming from liquid water. In the solar system there are many different environments that could contain significant clues to the origin of life and perhaps even life itself. Europa.

It accounts for about 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System. The Oort Cloud is made of icy pieces of space debris the sizes of mountains and sometimes larger, orbiting our Sun as far as 1.6 light years away.

It could be. And by having a mass spectrum of the constituents it has scooped up, it can identify what kind of molecules are there. Even tiny asteroids can have moons.
