The characters keep growing and becoming more and more their own people and the fear of their deaths keeps growing as well.

Abnett was touched by the Saint again and pulled off the story to end all stories. But where "Only in death" fails the most is in telling its own story, as the book feels like all lead-up for little to no conclusion. Abnett continues bringing forward new and minor characters into greater prominence within the story, with new trooper Dalin Criid and Cadet Commissar Ned Ludd featuring prominently. Wow. You would think that until you just put down this particular 11th book in the Gaunt's Ghosts series. Each main character saw there own little things in the house and not to mention the blood pact knocking on their door. Guess it just didn't hit my buttons hard enough.Gaunt's Ghosts march to the ass-end of nowhere, in Abnett's foray into adding supernatural horror to the mix. The usual twists and turns are in place and lead to a series of (OK, the usual) climactic battles against the Blood Pact. As the forces of Chaos mount an assault on Hinzerhaus, the Ghosts discover that a far greater threat than the exterior enemy may lurk in the bowels of the fortress.The war in the Sabbat Worlds wages on. A desert world, the Ghosts holed up in a deserted fortress in the mountains, screaming hordes of Blood Pact forces surrounding them, ghosts of Ghosts stirring, and Gaunt himself missing in action. sure as sure. The usual twists and turns are in place and lead to a series of (OK, the usual) climactic battles against the Blood Pact. IT MADE IT GREAT.

This felt like it was a genre swap into supernatural horror... which on further reflection is warhammer40k is it not? I read it in one day...Book 11 of the Gaunt's Ghosts series and the last so far. Just an endless warehouse no one has ever seen the other end of, always loaded up or loading up the Twinkie supply for Earth.Another fine entry to the gaunt's ghosts series. as both huge and claustrophobic... 11 time for me with the ghosts and still fresh new and worth it all! The series could end here and all would be right with the world.

The Ghosts have been deployed to Jago with orders to hold the remote mountain fortress of Hinzerhaus against a possible enemy flanking maneuver. It's 4am. This is the 11th book in the series, and Abnett has the ability to take events from (nearly) all the previous books and weave them into the story line. A good one. I couldn't put it down.
Solid book overall, but another example of where Dan Abnett raises the tension and plot pace too early in the book and then struggles to maintain the same pace and urgency for the duration. Now?
I really enjoyed Only in Death (does duty end).I have yet to read this book, but I don't have to read it to know that it is a work of genius. amazing. Just wow.
Only in Death Duty ends. Even more enticing a convo with others capable of reading and grasping the nuances, when they are there, of course.
