Parker Solar Probe

On May 9, 2020, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe began its longest observation campaign to date. Launched on Aug. 12, 2018, Parker Solar Probe will provide new data on solar activity and make critical contributions to our ability to forecast major space-weather events that impact life on Earth. In order to unlock the mysteries of the corona, but also to protect a society that is increasingly dependent on technology from the threats of space weather, we will send Parker Solar Probe to touch the Sun.In 2017, the mission was renamed for Eugene Parker, the S. Chandrasekhar Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus, Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago. The spacecraft, about the size of a small car, will travel directly into the Sun's atmosphere about 4 million miles from our star's surface. Parker Solar Probe is a historic mission, flying into the Sun's atmosphere (or corona) for the first time. A spacecraft that uses breakthrough technology and autonomy to endure heat and radiation like no other mission . A scientific mission to unlock the mysteries of the Sun's corona and solar wind. The spacecraft is in a highly elliptical orbit around the Sun (the yellow dot at the center of the plot), reaching its aphelion during the course of the mission initially at Earth and eventually closing to the orbit of Venus. This is the first NASA mission that has been named for a living individual. The spacecraft, which has already completed four progressively closer orbits around the Sun, activated its instruments at a distance of 62.5 million miles from the Sun’s surface, some 39 million miles farther from the Sun than a typical solar encounter. The celestial coordinates, magnitude, distances and speed are updated in real time and are computed using high quality data sets provided by the JPL Horizons ephemeris service (see acknowledgements for details). Getting to the Sun takes a lot of power. A unique solar observatory that will orbit within 4 million miles of our star's surface to directly study the formation of the solar wind This page shows Parker Solar Probe location and other relevant astronomical data in real time. What is Parker Solar Probe?

In the 1950s, Parker proposed a number of concepts about how stars—including our Sun—give off energy. Launched on Aug. 12, 2018, Parker Solar Probe will provide new data on solar activity and make critical contributions to our ability to forecast major … Still, as with any great mission of discovery, Parker Solar Probe is likely to generate more questions than it answers. The plot below shows Parker Solar Probe's location and speed (relative to the Sun) as it conducts its science operations. Parker Solar Probe will swoop to within 4 million miles of the Sun's surface, facing heat and radiation like no spacecraft before it. Parker Solar Probe will perform seven Venus flybys in order to more precisely set its trajectory toward the Sun; these flybys will slow the spacecraft down, instead of speeding it up, which is a more common use for planetary flybys. He called this cascade of energy the solar wind, and he described an entire complex system of plasmas, magnetic fields, and energetic particles that make up this phenomenon. NASA’s Parker Solar Probe will be the first-ever mission to "touch" the Sun.

Parker Solar Probe will revolutionize our knowledge of the origin and evolution of the solar wind.Integration and test formally started on 1 July 2016 with delivery of the flight structure with Parker Solar Probe provides a statistical survey of the outer corona.Parker Solar Probe has three detailed science objectives:Parker Solar Probe will use seven Venus flybys over nearly seven years to gradually shrink its orbit around the Sun, coming as close as 3.83 million miles (and 6.16 million kilometers) to the Sun, well within the orbit of Mercury and about seven times closer than any spacecraft has come before.Parker Solar Probe is a true mission of exploration; for example, the spacecraft will go close enough to the Sun to watch the solar wind speed up from subsonic to supersonic, and it will fly through the birthplace of the highest-energy solar particles.

In order to unlock the mysteries of the corona, but also to protect a society that is increasingly dependent on technology from the threats of space weather, we will send Parker Solar Probe to touch the Sun.The primary science goals for the mission are to trace the flow of energy and understand the heating of the solar corona and to explore what accelerates the solar wind.
