css before not showing

I'm just trying to spruce up the CSS a bit for the main content area.Well since the link is working that means it is most likely the pathway and not a selector. Who knows. For the life of me I can't figure out why this is not working:I'm just using test styling so I can more easily see what's going on. The :not(X) property in CSS is a negation pseudo class and accepts a simple selector 1 as an argument. Why isn't the before pseudo element showed above the div element when the position values (relative and absolute respectively) are not set? The passed argument may not contain additional selectors or any pseudo-element selectors. To make sure that the image link was correct I copied the path from another place where I know it works. Answer 1 The default display property of both :before and :after is inline, so your width and height declarations have no effect.

Even if I remove the background color it's not there. While using this site, you agree to have read and accepted our Tutorials, references, and examples are constantly reviewed to avoid errors, but we cannot warrant full correctness of all content. Before we jump into what :before and :after actually do in CSS and how you can use them to accomplish some cool stuff, let’s clear up one more major point of confusion.

Value: counter() or counters() This value is the most complex value that can be used with the content property. It looks like it's laying out properly, but the image is just not showing up.

If you look around the web for examples of :before and :after in use, you’ll find two different syntaxes. Try pasting in this link Well markdown isn't working for me right now so i cant show the code.So it has to be the path.

Sanjay,. For example if you had a folder called webiste, and inside you had 2 folders

But, once I put the new selector on the live page and then adjusted it from there, it worked. Even though I've done it before without problem, perhaps the pseudo element aspect of it made it tweak out? Insert some text before the content of each

element:The numbers in the table specifies the first browser version that fully supports the selector.Insert content before every

element's content, and style the inserted content:If you want to report an error, or if you want to make a suggestion, do not hesitate to send us an e-mail: Bah!Also, uhhh.. yeah I don't have much control over the HTML of that. Examples might be simplified to improve reading and basic understanding.

It looks like it's laying out properly, but the image is just not showing up. W3Schools is optimized for learning, testing, and training. background-image: url(images/dpwhite-small.png); Unfortunately, it does not appear that your HTML document has a body.

So it's most likely your file pathway. That's what I thought at first, but I've tried switching it out for file pathways that I know are currently working and that didn't do anything.I noticed your class was capitalized in the beginning of each word. That wasn't working so I added a border and background color and lots of extra space to see what was going on.

Can someone point me to the right direction so I can understand what I clearly do not currently? :not matches an element that is not represented by the argument.

There are four value types it can have. As you can see, I used CSS selector to style an element and as well as classes. I have tried all sorts of things, adjusting the float, positioning, z-indexes, display types, etc etc. That wasn't working so I added a border and background color and lots of extra space to see what was going on.

Yay!I tried to embed it but it didn't like that so much.. here's this link: [redacted]Your code seem ok. String.name::before { content: "Name: "; } Then an element like this: This is my first attempt at coding and I do not understand why the CSS is not working. Is the class of your div the same as your selector?

Rawr. The problem was, apparently, due to me trying to make the changes via chrome's Inspector. Could is your img folder outside of the folder your html is in?

I can't figure it out!Ideally it would just show the transparent image before the header text. The ::before selector inserts something before the content of each selected element(s).

Here, the background color and border show up but no background image. You seem to nest everything in a few set of divs, but your document doesn't seem to encapsulate its content in a body tag! Well organized and easy to understand Web building tutorials with lots of examples of how to use HTML, CSS, JavaScript, SQL, PHP, Python, Bootstrap, Java and XML. Essentially, just another selector of any kind. I just pasted in a background image (After adding html) and it worked.

Or that chrome inspector isn't working with it so well (that's how I am making the changes right now). However, when I load the .html, classes do not work but the element does. The content property in CSS is used in conjunction with the pseudo-elements ::before and ::after.It is used to literally insert content. Ideally it would just show the transparent image before the header text. But the same exact path works elsewhere in the stylesheet. The reason your background image is not showing up is because you added the background property to a style rule for the body of your HTML document. Even if I remove the background color it's not there.
