There is so much to gather from this book because topics are touched upon that normally would be dangerous for an author to write about; so I applaud Girard for taking such a big risk. Khalil’s death becomes national news, where he’s called a thug and possible drug dealer and gangbanger. Whether they are making tough choices, dealing with conflict, interacting with friends/frenemies, or simply doing stupid things and grappling with uncertainty -- it all felt authentically done (as opposed to a lot of what teens do and say in books, despite authors' best efforts). This book really goes into the events that queer girls have to deal with in real life too. is this just how the author sees all butch women? Girl Mans Up. We need more books like this. as a whole, i actually didn't like it that much, but there are some redeeming factors--the way Pen talks to Olivia about regretting things and feeling bad about things, for example.

Pen has spent her entire life getting glances from people, wondering if she is a girl or boy, but Pen just wants to do her own thing.

Questions remain about what happened in the moments leading to Khalil’s death, and the only witness is Starr, who must now decide what to say or do, if anything. Additionally, it's great to see that that's not all the book talks about. There are a lot of nuances to gender identity I really didn't get until I read this, and for that I like it a lot.

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter is a black girl and an expert at navigating the two worlds she exists in: one at Garden Heights, her black neighborhood, and the other at Williamson Prep, her suburban, mostly white high school. Khalil was unarmed. She likes her brothers clothes, working out, gaming, and often has an aversion to what people assume a girl will like, like dresses, make-up, or acting "lady-like". There is a void in fiction for characters who do not adhere to the gender binary, and it was fantastic to find a character like Pen who treads the boundary between boy and girl. A strong genderqueer lesbian character, imperfect, independent, and deserving of every cheer. This book explored these feelings gently yet head-on - being too much of a girl to be one of the guys, but too dudely to be one of the girls - struggling with that in-between. If she dresses like a girl, and does what her folks want, it will show respect. All Rights Reserved. )(Four stars for its potential with an olderish teen audience, three stars for how much I personally enjoyed it. Pen went through so much in this novel and always tried to push through it despite how hard things got, which was inspiring to read. She's 16. It shows yet another facet of human sexuality and gender identity that I had though I had an understanding of, but clearly I didn't, until M-E Girard explained some things to me.

But yeah, definitely a necessary book in YA, especially because of how strongly it depicts taking power into her own hands - progress in Pen's life happens because of decisions she makes, things she does, stuff she does, relationships she forges, works on, and cuts. Their sincere hopes and foolish naïveté make the teens’ desperate, grand gesture all that much more tragic.
