Furious Glaswegians slam ban on indoor visits while pubs...Save Our Shops! So Daisy Turnbull education turned towards The University of Notre Dame. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in Bachelors in Arts and Commerce.Later in her career, she wanted to become a teacher. She was born in the year 1985.
Daisy Turnbull met her future husband James Brown through mutual friends at a New Year’s Eve party.Enjoying their time together, they dated for sometimes. He even wrote a book about it.In 2014’s Anzac’s Long Shadow, Brown lamented the cuts to defence spending and the lack of support for modern veterans returning from the nation’s wars.He questioned how taxpayers could justify instead spending millions of dollar to mark a military defeat off Turkey 100 years ago.Brown’s also criticised the “obsession” with the Anzac legend which, he said, had done little to prepare Australian military forces for the next conflict. But when Wentworth Courier met up with Brown last week, he said a lot had changed in the past three years.“I’ve been really amazed in the last three years just seeing how much the message of focusing on veterans still alive has resonated everywhere,” the North Bondi RSL sub-branch vice president said.“I don’t think many people were thinking about younger veterans but that has changed.“I think younger veterans are more front of mind for government and the community as well.”For Brown, despite his vocal criticism, Anzac Day is one of the rare occasions when people slow down to think about history and the country.“I think Anzac Day is incredibly important,” he said.“For me there have been a few people I’ve served with who aren’t with us anymore and I think about them too.”Like every year, Brown will watch the sun rise at the North Bondi RSL on Tuesday.Gallipoli’s diggers and modern soldiers will be on his mind, as well as all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for Australia’s freedom.Brown will be thinking about Trooper Angus James Lawrence who died during a routine training exercise in the Northern Territory in 2004.The 25-year-old decorated soldier used to be under Brown’s command back when he was in Darwin.“We were on the other side of the country — all his mates, my troop, we had to keep training,” Brown said.“Only a few of us could go back so I think about him and his family.”As the waves break on Bondi Beach and the sun peeks past the headland, Michael Fussell is another name Brown will remember. The 25-year-old lieutenant was killed in action while on patrol in Afghanistan in 2008.“I also think about a lot of my mates who have had issues coming back, as well as the ones who haven’t and are still serving,” Brown said.Up to 20,000 people are expected to turn up at the iconic beach to pay their respects and reflect.“I think sadly Australians are understanding more and more that war is not only our past,” Brown said.“That our defence force still has conflicts that it deploys to now and probably, tragically will have to deploy to in the future.“I think Australians are not just thinking about the wars of 1918 but they’re also thinking about what happens if we need to send soldiers tomorrow and how do we make sure they’re as prepared as they can be.”Brown said it was important for future generations to keep the Anzac flame alive but not just once a year.“It’s such a community day that I don’t think it’s going to disappear, I don’t think we need to worry about that,” he said.“It’s great to see so many people come out for Anzac Day services but we’ve got to make sure they’re still there on the 26th of April, thinking about the help that veterans and their families need.“And thinking about how the government makes decisions about sending someone to war, it’s really important.”Since Brown left the army, he has spent the past seven years working on what Australia’s defence strategy should be, looking at how it structures its defence force and veterans’ issues.“I’m still in contact with a lot of colleagues in the military,” he said.“Those guys I’ve served with are my closest friends and I see them very frequently.”There are some things Brown misses about the military and others he doesn’t but one of the precious thing it has taught him is to never take freedom for granted. It’s something he will continue to teach Jack and Alice who will pass it on to their own children so that the Anzac legend never dies.
