shattered promises stories of called off weddings

We were featured in an episode of WNYC's Radiolab in July 2015. Only when Gray persisted late in pregnancy did she learn, from the Washington area’s organ procurement agency, that her baby’s organs probably would be too small for transplant but that donation for research was an option.Statistics from the United Network for Organ Sharing show that organs from a dozen newborns, those younger than a month old, were donated last year for transplant. On the research front, Dr. Arupa Ganguly of the University of Pennsylvania studies retinoblastoma, eye cancer that attacks young children.

“I received a letter back two days later from Dr. Ganguly, telling me how valuable Thomas's donation was to her research,” recalls Sarah. ... Gray's Donation Thu July 16. It also became clear that several shows could be counted on for a good cry: Radiolab, This American Life, Heavyweight, Reply All, Nancy, The Cut on Tuesdays, and Terrible, Thanks for Asking, all made two or more appearances on the list. (AP Photo/Rick Gentilo)Connect with the definitive source for global and local news She’d like to visit that lab, too.In this frame grab from video, taken Sept. 14, 2016, Sarah Gray with her son Callum, 6, and infant daughter Jocelyn in their Washington home. So during a business trip to Boston, she called the Harvard-affiliated eye lab, identified herself as a donor mom, and asked for a tour — a first for the lab, and one that changed the scientists’ perspective.“I still think more about, when we get a donated cornea, who that came from,” said Zieske.Eventually Gray visited each lab that procured and handled Thomas’ tissue. A North Carolina biotechnology company, Cytonet, uses liver cells in researching treatment for babies awaiting a liver transplant. One day, I would like to meet them, and thank them personally for whatever pain and inconvenience they endured to donate the blood that literally saved my life. Three projects were working on ways to cure or prevent deadly diseases and one was to help people who are blind to see again. I was very lucky because Dr. Ganguly has been extremely open and helpful. We came together as Perelman School of Medicine students because we wanted to increase educational equity in access to medical school. Sarah Gray was pregnant with twins. For example, during childbirth I needed a transfusion of blood. Only when Gray persisted late in pregnancy did she learn, from the Washington area’s organ procurement agency, that her baby’s organs probably would be too small for transplant but that donation for research was an option. Latching onto hope for something positive to come from heartache, Gray donated some of Thomas’ tissue for scientific research — his eyes, his liver, his umbilical cord blood.Only no one could tell the Washington mother if that precious donation really made a difference. I can think of specific stories that I loved listening to, but it’s kind of a bummer, I don’t think there really is a way to go back and access old episodes, even if you subscribe.

Not every donor's family will be able to do what we did, or even want to, and not every researcher will be open to connecting. So I was hoping that they would understand that my family played a small part in what they do, and even though I am not a researcher, I care about what they do and I want to know more. Thomas’ corneas were ordered to study how to repair blindness-inducing corneal damage. In recovering tissue from deceased donors, hospitals consult a national registry of researchers’ current needs. On that day in 2010, Thomas died at home in his father’s arms. I received donated blood products from about eight or nine people, total.

The lab has really established a bond with that family. I hope that by sharing the details of our story that other families who donated for research can get an idea of what may have happened to their donation. Also, there is a shortage of some research tissues. It was a privilege to visit the lab and meet Dr. Ganguly and the staff and to learn about what they do to help save lives. Radiolab is a show about curiosity. English or Spanish speaking adults welcome. We can do that as well. But every now and then, I also like to click on the link to the cornea study that might have resulted from Thomas's cornea donation and see all the other studies he may have indirectly helped.
