Everyone seems to know the simple chorus, the repeating of the word “Noel” that ends with, “born is the King of Israel”. It appeared in Some Ancient Christmas Carols (1823) and Christmas Carols, Ancient and Modern (1833), edited by William Sandys. Its contemporary style was originally printed in Carols Ancient and Modern (1823) and Gilbert and Sandys Carols (1833), both of which were published by William Sandys and arranged, revised and with additional lyrics penned by Davies Gilbert for Hymns and Carols of God .
The spelling of the word "Noel" would indicate it to be French, however, England claims the original spelling was the English version "Nowell".
